AI assistants
Tool reference
Every tool PlayStep's MCP server offers, when each one runs, who sees it, and the built-in prompts.
Your assistant picks the tools; you ask in your own words. This page is for checking what a request will do, and for setting per-tool permissions in your assistant.
Runs says what happens when the assistant calls the tool:
- At once: it runs right away, on every level, Read only included.
- On Build at once, on Suggest a request: a draft change. It runs right away on Build drafts and waits for approval on Suggest changes.
- Always a request: a person approves it under Settings › Approvals first.
Read only connections see only the tools that run at once. Who sees it is the role the person who connected needs: see Roles.
Workspace
| Tool | What it does | Runs | Who sees it |

guide_get | One guide: its draft, its revision, where it is live, its versions and what blocks publishing. | At once | Everyone |
guide_preview_link | A link that shows the guide's draft in your real app for 1 hour, to the person who opens it. Nothing is published or metered. | At once | Everyone |
guide_create | Creates a draft guide from a template (blank, onboarding, feature or checklist) or from a full draft. | On Build at once, on Suggest a request | Everyone |

guide_duplicate | Copies a guide into a new draft. | On Build at once, on Suggest a request | Everyone |
guide_publish | Publishes the current draft to development or production. End users see it within a minute of approval. | Always a request | Everyone |
guide_rollback | Makes an earlier version live again in an environment. | Always a request | Everyone |
guide_pause | Stops a guide everywhere it is live, without unpublishing it. | Always a request | Everyone |
guide_resume | Shows a paused guide again where it is published. | Always a request | Everyone |
guide_unpublish | Removes a guide from one environment. Its draft and versions stay. | Always a request | Everyone |
guide_delete | Deletes a guide with all its versions, from every environment. Cannot be undone: the approver types its name. | Always a request | Everyone |
Analytics and anchors
| Tool | What it does | Runs | Who sees it |
|---|---|---|---|
analytics_get | One guide's funnel for the last 7, 30 or 90 days: starts, completions, dismissals, how many people reach each step, the biggest drop-off and a daily trend. Without a guide, the most started one. | At once | Everyone |
anchors_list | The anchors an app's guides point at, where the SDK last saw each one, and which are stale. | At once | Everyone |
Clips
| Tool | What it does | Runs | Who sees it |
|---|---|---|---|
clip_list | An app's clips (hosted, external links, YouTube and Vimeo), their health and which steps use them. | At once | Everyone |
clip_add_link | Adds a clip by link: an MP4 or WebM file on your own host, checked before it is saved, or a YouTube or Vimeo video. Uploading files happens in the dashboard. | On Build at once, on Suggest a request | Everyone |
clip_delete | Deletes a clip that no published version uses. Hosted files are removed for good: the approver types its name. | Always a request | Everyone |
Generate with AI
These tools run Generate with AI on a public page of your app. Pages behind a sign-in need a capture link from the dashboard.
| Tool | What it does | Runs | Who sees it |
|---|---|---|---|
generation_list | An app's analyses from the last 30 days, and how many AI generations are left this month. | At once | Everyone |
generation_get | One analysis: the screens it captured, whether its crawl or generation is still running, and the tours it suggested. | At once | Everyone |
generation_crawl | Visits a public page of your app and the pages it links to on the same site, up to 10 pages in all, and records their screens. | On Build at once, on Suggest a request | Everyone |
generation_suggest | Suggests tours from an analysis's screens. Uses 1 of your monthly AI generations. | On Build at once, on Suggest a request | Everyone |
suggestion_create_draft | Turns a suggested tour into a guide draft, with a note on what to record for each step's clip. | On Build at once, on Suggest a request | Everyone |
suggestion_dismiss | Hides a suggestion nobody wants. | On Build at once, on Suggest a request | Everyone |
Requests
| Tool | What it does | Runs | Who sees it |
|---|---|---|---|
request_list | The changes this assistant asked for, newest first, and how each one ended. | At once | Everyone |
request_get | How one request ended, with the result once it is applied. | At once | Everyone |
Environments
| Tool | What it does | Runs | Who sees it |
|---|---|---|---|
environment_update | Turns an environment's kill switch (which stops every guide at once) on or off, or changes its help launcher: on or off, its corner, title and text. Only what the assistant names changes. An owner or admin approves it. | Always a request | Everyone |
Admin
| Tool | What it does | Runs | Who sees it |
|---|---|---|---|
workspace_update | Renames the workspace. | Always a request | Owners and admins |
app_create | Adds an app with development and production environments and their keys. The approver sees the secret keys; the assistant gets the publishable keys. | Always a request | Owners and admins |
app_update | Changes an app's name, platforms or web address. | Always a request | Owners and admins |
app_rotate_keys | Replaces an environment's publishable and secret keys. The old publishable key stops loading guides within a minute and the old secret key stops working at once, so your app and servers need the new ones. The approver sees the new secret key once. | Always a request | Owners and admins |
app_delete | Deletes an app with its guides, clips and keys, and its guides stop showing at once. Cannot be undone: the approver types its name. | Always a request | Owners and admins |
member_invite | Invites someone by email as a member or an admin. The invitation link works for 7 days. | Always a request | Owners and admins |
member_set_role | Makes a member an admin, or an admin a member. An owner's role changes only in the dashboard. | Always a request | Owners and admins |
member_remove | Removes someone from the workspace, and they lose access at once. Owners are removed only in the dashboard. | Always a request | Owners and admins |
billing_set_spend_cap | Sets or removes the monthly overage spend cap, in US dollars. Only owners can approve it. | Always a request | Owners |
How tools are marked
PlayStep describes each tool to your assistant, so the assistant can decide when to ask you first:
| Mark | On |
|---|---|
| Read-only | Every tool that runs at once |
| Destructive | Every tool that is always a request: changes that reach end users, workspace settings and deletions |
| Idempotent | Tools where repeating the same call changes nothing more, such as guide_pause or member_set_role |
| Reaches outside PlayStep | clip_add_link, which checks your link, and generation_crawl, which visits your public pages |
On a Suggest changes connection, each draft tool's description also says that it becomes a request.
The help tool takes a topic: start, guide-spec, publishing, approvals, generate, clips or anchors.
Built-in prompts
Ready-made tasks you start from your assistant. Claude shows them as slash commands; in Claude Code they are named like /mcp__playstep__weekly_report. Every argument named app is the app's slug, and you can leave it out when the workspace has one app.
| Prompt | What it does | Arguments |
|---|---|---|
build_onboarding_guide | Plans and drafts a first-run guide of 3 to 6 steps, from a public page of your app when you give one, then gives you a preview link. It does not publish. | app; goal (what new users should manage to do); url (optional) |
improve_guide_from_analytics | Finds where people drop off in a guide, drafts a fix and gives you a preview link. | app; guide (optional: the most started guide) |
weekly_report | A report of under 200 words on how guides did this week and what needs attention. | app |
fix_missing_anchors | Finds steps pointing at anchors your app no longer shows, drafts fixes, and lists what developers need to put back. | app |
prepare_release | Fixes what blocks a draft, gives you a preview link, waits for your go-ahead, then asks to publish. | app; guide; env (dev or prod, production when left out) |
translate_guide | Adds another language to a guide's draft, keeping product names and button labels as your app shows them. It does not publish. | app; guide; locale (like de, fr or pt-BR) |
Read only connections get weekly_report only. Example prompts has more to copy.
